About the Models and Miniatures
Stapleford is located to the east of Melton Mowbray just south of the River Eye in the splendid county of Leicestershire. The miniature railway is about 16 miles northeast of Leicester City and about the same distance from Grantham.
The railway is usually only open two times per year for events. This is one of them and the second is the Vintage Steam Rally held in August. Both events exemplify the spirit of the miniature railway, and also provide some stalls for light refreshments and a few other exhibits.
The video below has some great footage of the trains in motion, signal boxes, station and some of the twists and turns in the railway tracks. Follow the trains as it goes past 'Lakeside', over Haven Bridge and through the wooded sidings and land. There are three bridges in total and one tunnel.
Stapleford Miniature Railway
The miniature railway is run and maintained by 'The Friends of Stapleford Miniature Railway' (FSMR) who are a volunteer organisation dedicated to the preservation and running of the locomotives, equipment and buildings. All profits made by the railway are donated to charity.
Entry To The Event
The show opens at 10.00 am each day. Car parking is £5. Entry is free but if you want to ride on the miniature steam train, tickets are £3 per trip per person.
Somewhere to Stay in Leicestershire
The railway has a campsite - £30 for the weekend - get in touch with the railway directly to book. If a tent is not your prefered way to spend a night or two, consider the plush 4-star hotel on the doorstep; Stapleford Park Country House Hotel, located less than 5 minutes away, is a perfect way to continue the weekend experience.
Getting To Stapleford Park
The event is central to Grantham, Peterborough and Leicester so whichever direction you are coming from those are the places to head towards. As you get closer head towards Melton Mowbray via the A606 or A607. The railway is situated a few miles east of Melton Mowbray town centre off Saxby Road (B676). Take care on the narrow country roads.
Other Things To Do Around The Area
There is not that much to do in the immediate area. So if you are looking for a few other things to fill out a long weekend then you will probably need to head into Leicester City - where there is plenty to do! Alternatively, check out Rutland Water at Oakham for a relaxing family stroll.
There is more to read about the railway on the official website. Of particular interest is the 'History' page, showcasing the lines, ermm ... History from 1958 to present day. Very informative and worth a read if you are planning to attend the event.
