About the North West Vintage Steam Rally
About 15 miles east of Liverpool is the town of Widnes. By the late 19th century it was not a very pleasant place because of the pollution from the many chemical factories operating 60 to 80 years before the protection of the environment became an industry in itself. Fortunately, the area recovered over time with modern factories and reclamation projects that have completely changed the image of Widnes. Right in the middle of the town is the recently refurbished Victoria Park, where the North West Vintage Steam Rally is held each September.
The steam rally is the “largest free admission gathering of vintage fair organs and vintage machinery in the UK, lovingly restored to the highest standards and here for you to enjoy.” There is something for everyone of all ages.
The North West Vintage Steam Rally will feature hundreds of classic cars, bikes, vintage machinery, vintage funfair, model boats, miniature steam engines, an entertainment arena, and much more. The theme of the event has not yet been determined but recent shows have featured medieval re-enactments groups like Historia Normannis, to give a delighted crowd a humorous look at 12th-century life.
Halton Borough Council
In recent years rain and other events have caused the cancellation of the rally that has been an annual event for over 20 years. The hope is that next year’s rally will be a huge success that will continue for many years. The organizers are the Halton Borough Council and George Houghton, who is the Chairman of the North West Group of the Fair Organ Preservation Society (FOPS), this is a free admission event but donations to FOPS are greatly appreciated. Traders and exhibitors will need to fill in an entry form that will soon be available online.

Somewhere to Stay in Cheshire
Warrington is about 7 miles east of Widnes and offers Camping and Caravan parks like the Hollybank Caravan Park and the highly rated Laylands Farm campsite. There are a few hotels in Windes near Victoria Park, but visitors will be able to find more variety of accommodations to the west toward Liverpool and east toward Warrington.
Other Things To Do Around Widnes
Weekend visitors have a choice to make after spending the day at the steam rally. Other places to see include Spike Island, the winner of the Green Flag Award that recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces. The Trans Pennine Trail has items of industrial archaeological interest and a canal. Spike Island is acknowledged as the birthplace of the British chemical industry from the area’s “less than green” days. Other places to see include The Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in Widnes or a road trip to Liverpool to see where the British music invasion all began.
Free car parking is available at the municipal building where visitors can take a free shuttle bus to the park. This is an outdoor even on mostly level ground with paved walkways but people in wheelchairs will need to check with Victoria Park as to accessibility details and information on dogs and bathroom facilities. People with connections to Mother Nature are encouraged to beg or bribe her for good weather at the next North West Vintage Steam Rally.
