About the Much Marcle Steam Rally

Much Marcle is located near the heart of the Wye Valley in the historic county of Herefordshire. The site is about halfway between Hereford and Gloucester and halfway between Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye.

This annual shows attracts visitors from near and far each year and is always well organised and run. The rally usual showcases tractor pulling, steam engines, classic cars, bikes, and commercial vehicles, and has a Saturday Auction, as well as a few trade stands.

The video below gives a fair idea of the days proceedings - plenty of vintage tractors in a nice open space on parade. Traction engines, vintage lorries, buses, classic cars and motorcycles. Plus some tractor pulling - look out for the wheelies at about 19 minutes! Fantastic stuff.

Much Marcle Steam Rally

The rally is organised by The Herefordshire Traction Engine and Vintage Club who formed in 1986, the same year that the first rally was held. The club meet monthly throughout the year to share their love of preservation and welcome new members who share their passion. You can contact the club through the email link found on their official website.

Entry To The Rally

Admission to the Steam Rally is £10 for adults. Accompanied children under 16 get in for free. The rally starts at 8.00 am on the Saturday and 10.00 am on the Sunday. The rally goes on until late on Saturday and finishes at 5.00pm on Sunday. There is an auction on Saturday which starts at 10.00 am.

Somewhere to Stay in Herefordshire

There is a campsite at the rally - contact the organisers for more on that. There are other campsites in the area but why go there when you can camp on the doorstep and support the rally at the same time? Other accommodation options are available - for those who don't want to spend the night in a field - in nearby Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye. Plenty of 3 and 4-star hotels and bed and breakfasts to suit every budget.

Getting To Rye Meadows

Finding Much Marcle and the Steam Rally is easy enough. Access via the M50 (junction 2, head to Ledbury and south on the A449) if travelling from the M5 north. Use the A40 and A449 if travelling from South Wales.

Other Things To Do Around Ledbury

If this weekend of activities is not enough for you or if you are planning a longer weekend there are a few things of worth to visit in the nearby area. Try Eastnor Castle to the northeast, just on the other side of Ledbury. And Goodrich Castle to the southwest, just on the other side of Ross. If you are also in that area, try Wye Valley, Symonds Yat East for a splendid day of canoeing on the River Wye! That would be my choice!

Well behaved dogs are welcomed at Much Marcle Steam Rally, but please keep them on a lead and be sure to clean up any dog mess. There is plenty of free parking at the event and some space is reserved for less abled visitors close to the rally entrance.

I have attended this show many times in the past, and always enjoy it.This year I was very impressed with the way the public were invited to to join the "Steamers" on the footplate and steer the the Traction Engines across the field. The ladies and youngsters, in particular, seemed to really enjoy the driving experience. An excellent way to promote interest in "Steam Club" membership.
