About the Malpas Yesteryear Rally
The city of Crewe, with a population of about 75,000 is located about halfway between Manchester and Birmingham in the UK. One of its notable citizens was William Hope (1863–1933), a pioneer of “spirit photography", where pictures of the dear departed would appear on film posing with living relatives in what may be called a paranormal selfie. Hope might have fared better in the modern era of smartphones and photoshop. He could have set up a stand to dupe people out of their hard-earned cash at the Malpas Yesteryear Rally, an annual steam event held 16 miles west of Crewe in the town of Malpas.
We promise that any money spent at the Malpas Yesteryear Rally will be well worth it. The two-day steam event held on a September weekend offers thousands of exhibits and activities for the whole family.
About 750 of the “thousands of exhibits” will be the many steam engines, stationary and miniature engines, plus military vehicles, cars, tractors, motorcycles, and pedal-powered bicycles. Add to that the heavy horses and working demonstrations, craft and trade stands, and old-time fairground and other family entertainment. Enjoying the offerings of catering outlets and drinks from the bar will leave you little time for a “spirit photography” session.
Malpas Vintage Machinery Association
The host and organiser of the show is the Malpas Vintage Machinery Association Ltd (MVMA). The association was founded in 1971 by a small group of vintage tractor and steam engine enthusiasts. The first Malpas Yesteryear Rally was held the following year. It was incorporated on 21 December 1982 and is now approaching 50 years of providing a weekend of family fun every September on the second weekend after the August Bank Holiday.
Entry To The Rally
The gates will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m. each day. Adults can enter for £10.00; children are £5.00, and a family ticket is available for £26.00. Kids under age 5 enter for free. Before you arrive, please check one last time with the MVMA for any changes.
Somewhere to Stay in Cheshire
Public camping is available on the site of the rally and there are plenty of other camping and caravan parks to choose from in the Malpas area. Check with the MVMA for onsite camping information. Hotels and B&Bs will be found in abundance as you head west to Wrexham or east to Crewe.
Other Things To Do Around The Area
Weekend visitors looking for a side trip will find many attractions near Malpas. One is the Stretton Watermill, a working historic watermill. They will even put you to work milling grain or just relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside setting. And if you do go to Crewe seeking to take a “ghost selfie”, be sure to visit Englesea Brook Chapel & Museum. Built in 1828, the chapel was one of the earliest chapels of the Primitive Methodist movement and may just be a prime spot for the ghosts of Methodists looking for one more church potluck dinner.
The large open area of the field means that dogs are welcome on leads, but please be considerate and take care of any “gifts” your pooch will deposit in the grass. The terrain is flat and grassy so wheelchairs will be able to access most places. Do check with the MVMA for handicapped facilities or for any situation that may apply. Parking is free and spirit photography may be available after hours if the ghosts are not too tired after a day of fun at the Malpas Yesteryear Rally.
When is the next Malpas Yesteryear Rally?
