About the Bronte Vintage Gathering
Located about 20 miles west of Leeds and about 40 miles northeast of Manchester is the junction of Halifax and Haworth Road and a little spot called Flappit Spring. About 1/3 mile down the road is the site of the not so little annual weekend event called the Bronte Vintage Gathering.
The Bronte Vintage Gathering is described as a popular country show featuring elements of a traditional steam rally, medieval 'faire' and modern county fair with something for everyone.
Steam and vintage car enthusiasts will not be disappointed with the displays of steamers, stationary engines, cars, motorcycles, and lorries. A jousting competition or a sword fight might break out if the Knights of Nottingham make an appearance. If you arrive the night before, be sure to bring your 'inner hillbilly' and engage in some 'boot-flingin, bull riding hillbilly hoedown fun' at the Hillbilly Gathering. Dog shows, fun, and games for the kids and charity raffles will fill the weekend for you and your family.
Bronte Vintage Gathering
The rally is organized by the Bronte Vintage Gathering Committee and a host of volunteers who have worked tirelessly for over 20 years to make this event possible and raise funds for the Sue Ryder Care Hospice Manorlands, located nearby in Oxenhope.
Entry To The Event
Beginning at 10:00 am, both Saturday and Sunday the fun continues until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Beer Tent will have free live entertainment on Saturday, and don’t forget about that Hillbilly Hoedown on Friday night for those campers and others who arrive early. Exhibitors must fill out an entry form that can be downloaded from the official site. Admission prices have not yet been announced, so keep checking the site as the date of the Gathering approaches.
Somewhere to Stay in West Yorkshire
Campers are welcome on the site for £40 for the whole weekend, and there are at least a dozen other campsites within a 10-mile radius of the Gathering for tent campers and caravaners. If you want to experience being a redneck hillbilly at the hoedown and then retire to a place of refined elegance on the same day, then choose the Ashmount Country House that offers luxury guest house and B&B accommodation in Haworth. Another great choice nearby is the King’s Head Hotel, a low-key pub with rooms flanked by shops and restaurants
Getting To Cullingworth Fields
Drivers arriving from Halifax from the south and Keighley from the north will have an easy task to find the Bronte Village Gathering. At the junction of Halifax Road (A629) and Haworth Road (B6144) at Flappit Spring, turn toward the southeast on Haworth and less than ½ mile later you are at your destination. If you are not sure where to go when you get to Flappit Spring be sure to have a drink at The Flappit pub, and the folks there will steer you in the right direction.
Other Things To Do Around Cullingworth
If you are staying for the weekend and only want to spend one day at the Gathering, there are plenty of things to do in nearby Leeds. One offbeat destination, The Thackray Medical Museum, houses a collection of over 50,000 objects from medical history which date from Roman times to the present day. A word of warning to the squeamish, however, The Leeds 1842 exhibit describes medical procedures before the days of anaesthesia. Another choice is a serene visit to Kirkstall Abbey and Abbey House Museum, where you will wander through the ruins of a 900-year-old Cistercian monastery.
Please call ahead for information about bringing your dog to the Gathering and for information about wheelchair and handicapped accessibilities. Finally, be sure to practice your 'yee-haw' for that Friday night Hoedown!
