About the Marsworth Steam and Classic Vehicle Rally
Startop Farm, in Marsworth, lies between the towns of Dunstable to the east and Aylesbury to the west off the B489. Alice Cooper (not the rocker with the weird eye shadow) took her sons to Britain in 1909 to enroll them in Dunstable Grammar School in Bedfordshire to get a "proper English education". One of her sons went on to become the actor Gary Cooper, a major Hollywood star from 1925 until his death in 1961. Cooper may have played the lead role in over 80 films, but there will be many more steam engines, vintage, and classic vehicles at the Marsworth Steam and Classic Vehicle Rally held at Startop Farm in June.
The Rally is a one-day Sunday event held in June and features oner 18 full-size steam engines along with many other attractions. No need to be "Putting on the Ritz" or "Tryin' hard to look like Gary Cooper" at this casual summer event.
Along with the steam engines will be hundreds of vintage and classic vehicles plus tractors, commercial, and military vehicles. And while Dad goes to the beer tent to down a few pints (or just have some tea if he had too much ale on Saturday night), the kids will be happy riding on the steam engines and enjoying all the other kid's entertainment. Craft and food stands will prevent any complaints of being hungry, and live music in the arena will keep you smiling.
For over 20 years this event, usually held on Father's Day, has a purpose of not only providing a fun day for everyone who attends but also to raise funds for various local charities
Entry To The Rally
The gates open at 11:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m., and the entry fees are £6.00 for adults and £3.00 for kids. Donations above and beyond that are appreciated, and if you are a local denizen, think about volunteering, the key to a successful steam rally. If you are an exhibitor, want to operate a trade stand, or be part of the catering team, be sure to submit an application well in advance of the show to help the organisers.
Somewhere to Stay in Hertfordshire
Campers and Caravaners will be delighted at campsites like Town Farm and the "glamping" spot like Wingbury Farm Glamping. Hotels are numerous in the surrounding towns of Aylesbury and Dunstable but be warned that both towns are known for having some great pubs, so do plan accordingly or be relegated to tea at the Rally on Sunday.
Getting To Startop Farm
Drivers arriving from Aylesbury will take the A41 (Aston Clinton Road) and head east for about 2.5 miles. At the roundabout, the A41 continues northeast and then curves to a southeast direction. Exit onto the B489 (Lower Icknield Way). It will meander a bit but will take you to the destination. Drivers coming from the east will need to navigate to the town of Dunstable and take the B489 heading southwest all the way to Startop Farm.
Other Things To Do Around B489 Ivinghoe to Aston Clinton Road
A couple of miles south of Marsworth is the Natural History Museum of Tring, where the family can spend a few hours looking at an array of ancient animal mummies and curiosities. Visit the Warner Brothers Studio Tour London and see where the wonderful Harry Potter sets and special effects scenes were shot. Note that this is a bit expensive with an adult ticket at £47.00 (Child is £38.00), but if your kid is a Harry Potter fan, it will create a lasting memory.
Well behaved dogs are welcome, and the free parking opens at 10:30 a.m. The fair is held on open farmland, and wheelchair users have been welcome attendees at every past show. If you or a member of your group needs special assistance, please contact the organisers before your arrival. And it doesn't matter if you look like Gary Cooper, the Marsworth Steam and Classic Vehicle Rally offers no discounts for being handsome.
