Steam Event In Herefordshire

Saturday 18th May, 2019 Steam Event May, Herefordshire No comments yet.

About the Steam at the Hoops

About 50 miles north of London along the A505 is the town of Royston with a population of about 15,000. Take a short drive north on the A1198 to The Causeway and make a left turn. You will enter the civil parish of Bassingbourn and the realm of The Hoops, a traditional British village pub and host of the annual Steam at the Hoops Steam Rally.

This is a one-day event where vintage steam engines come from wide and far to participate in this charitable event.

The steam engines are the stars of the show, but one of the most popular events is an auction of items contributed by local businesses. You will not go hungry as the event features an all-day barbeque. If that doesn’t fill you up, The Hoops pub offers 'everything a great British pub should; a warm welcome, delicious food, real ales, a beer garden or an open fire (depending on the good old British weather), a classy wine selection - .' and much more.

The Hoops Traditional Village Pub

Steam engine enthusiast Clive Flack is the organiser and said this in a recent interview with the Royster Crow, a community newspaper and website: 'Engine owners drive considerable miles to contribute to this gathering. All the proceeds from the day are ploughed into organising a day out for the village pensioners, and other local worthy causes. From a small gathering and one steam roller in 2013, the event is becoming larger and more popular each year.' Clive continues to ‘wow’ visitors with marvellous exhibits.

Entry To The Event

The Rally times have not yet been announced so check back at a later date to make sure you don’t arrive too early or too late. The entry is free so this will allow you to make a higher bid at the charity auction. Contact Clive Flack or The Hoops for information about exhibitors and other details.

Somewhere to Stay in Herefordshire

The latest rage for those who like camping but are not into 'roughing it' is glamping, or glamour camping. If this appeals to you, then check out Guilden Gate Glamping locate very near to The Hoops. There are other more traditional campsites in the area as well for those who wish to stay for a weekend. Nearby Hotels and B&Bs include the Orchard House or Redwing Rise located in Royston.

Getting To The Hoops

Visitors driving north from the London area will head north on the A1(M) and take the A505 into Royston. Take a left turn onto the Old North Road (A1198) and head about a mile to The Causeway where a left turn will lead you directly to The Hoops. An alternate route that is about 15 mile more in distance but with less traffic is to take the M11 to Duxford, make a left onto the A505 and then a right onto the A1198 that again leads to The Causeway.

Other Things To Do Around Bassingbourn

If you like history and a bit of intrigue, visit the Royston Cave during your stay. You can choose if it was used by the Knights Templar or was an Augustinian storehouse or a Neolithic flint mine to explain the cave’s origin. You may also find some surprises at the Royston and District Museum and Art Gallery, a hidden gem excellent to fill a few hours if lousy weather delays your trip to Steam at the Hoops.
