About the The Three Cocks Vintage Steam Rally
The Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye, or simply Hay sits in the historic county of Brecknockshire. Known for its bookstores, the town also has a self-proclaimed “King” with Richard Booth, a British bookseller. Another notorious resident was Herbert Rowse Armstrong (1869 – 1922), an English solicitor and convicted murderer known as the “Hay Poisoner” who used arsenic to off his wife and rival solicitor. His reward was hanging but a more pleasant reward awaits those who attend The Three Cocks Vintage Steam Rally held in August each year in Hay.
The Three Cocks Vintage Society is the host of this two-day steam rally held on the grounds of the Boatside Farm. About 5,000 people are expected to attend this show that will appeal to every member of your family and steam enthusiasts who have no claims of kinship.
The main events throughout the weekend may include a demonstration of canine prowess by Paws for Thought or the Jez Avery Stunt Team. Both have performed in previous shows. There will be a large selection of Steam Traction Engines, Commercial Vehicles, Vintage and Classic Cars, Tractors, Motor and Pedal Cycles, Stationary Engines, Historic Caravans, and miscellaneous exhibits in “Granddads Collection.” Kids will enjoy the children's fairground, the nostalgic sounds of fair organs will be heard, trade stands and a car boot sale will help you find that missing item. If none of that appeals to you, then you can even take a helicopter ride if the weather permits.
Three Cocks Vintage Society
January of 1978 was the founding of The Three Cocks Vintage Society by the original eleven members who shared an interest in preserving and restoring vintage machinery. In 1981, Boatside Farm in Hay became the venue of the rally where it continues today. The show promises a great family day out with entertainment for all ages, but the more important purpose is to help local charities.
Entry To The Rally
Exhibitors and trade stands will be ready to go at 10:00 a.m. on both days and will be there until 5:00 p.m. The entry prices are £9.00 for each adult, £4.00 for children age 11 and up with kids under age 11 entering for free. OAPs will fork over £7.00 for entry. Note that there are Car Boot Charges at £18.00 for Cars, £20.00 for a car, trailer or small van, and £30.00 for a large van.
Somewhere to Stay in Herefordshire
Campers, Glampers, and small camping vans will be able to set up a weekend home at Racquety Farm near to the steam rally. Large caravan and motorhomes will find accommodations at Dark Orchard CAMC CL Caravan Site located on the edge of Hay-on-Wye, yet only a 5-minute walk to the town centre. Those into basic camping for tents only and limited amenities will find Gypsy Castle Camping to their liking. An adequate number of hotels and B&Bs dot the landscape in and around Hay.
Other Things To Do Around The Area
Weekend travellers and vacationers will want to set aside some time to explore the local attractions of Hay. The Hay Castle dates to over a thousand years ago as a medieval stronghold. It may still be undergoing restoration so check on that before visiting it. Another sight to see is Arthur’s stone where the legend claims that King Arthur slew a giant who left the impression of his elbows on one of the stones as he fell. Worcester is about 50 miles to the east of Hay for those who want to see where the famous Lea & Perrins sauce originated from.
Parking is free and dogs on leashes are welcome. The Society warns that the rally is held on a working farm so there may be some uneven or slippery surfaces that may make it a challenge for people in wheelchairs, especially if there is any rain. We know that Herbert Rowse Armstrong will not attend The Three Cocks Vintage Steam Rally but do be on the lookout for two elderly ladies selling homemade elderberry wine.
