Steam Rally In Hampshire

Saturday 26th June, 2021  -  Sunday 27th June, 2021 Weekend Steam Rally June, Hampshire No comments yet.

About the Dene Rally

Located about 25 miles north of Portsmouth and situated between the M3 and the A3 is the small village of Ropley, best known for providing the honey for William the Conqueror's mead. Perhaps mead will be on sale about three miles away where the Dene Rally takes place this summer?

Described as a 'collection of interesting things vintage', the Dene Rally is classified as a dairy event, but that should be of little concern to steam enthusiasts. They aim to have something for everyone.

The 'interesting things vintage' includes full-size traction steam engines, classic motorbikes, automobiles, tractors, and mini-steam engines. There will be craft and trade stalls, rides for the kids and twice each day, gunslingers, cowboys, and maybe some outlaws 'invade' the Rally for a Wild West Show. A true dairy event means lots of ice cream, but there will be a beer tent for those who prefer a grain-based beverage.

Dene Rally

This family-oriented event is not the biggest steam rally in the UK, but it promises to be one of most entertaining. It brags of over 200 exhibits and the friendliest atmosphere that is more like a giant backyard barbeque than an organized event. The funds raised by the event always go to a deserving cause, most notably the rebuilding of St. Peter’s Church in Ropley that was almost entirely destroyed by a fire in 2014.

Entry To The Rally

The opening times for the next Rally have yet to be posted, but previous shows have opened at 10:00 a.m. each day, and admission prices have historically been quite reasonable at about £5.00 for adults. The Dene Rally maintains a social media presence on Facebook, so the exact information should be there in due time.

Somewhere to Stay in Hampshire

For those looking to make a get-away weekend of the Rally, there are plenty of camping sites and hotel accommodations nearby. Watercress Lodges and Campsite in Alresford offers both cabins, 'glamping' tents and pitch your own tent sites. The Two Hoots Campsite is another great camping spot in Alresford. There are many 3 and 4-star hotels and B&Bs along the A31 toward Winchester.

Getting To Charlwood Lane

Drivers arriving from Winchester and the M3 will exit on the A31 and head east. At Ropley Dean make a right turn onto Petersfield Road where the Thai Lounge is located. Petersfield Road will take you all the way to Charlwood Lane just past Lockaway Storage, where you will make a sharp left turn and head to the destination. Drivers coming from the A3 will need to head north on Bell Hill Road, meander through Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve to the A32. Turn right on the A32 and then take an immediate left onto Petersfield Road to Charlwood Lane. From Winchester, a free vintage bus will run between Winchester City Centre and Alresford railway station.

Other Things To Do Around Monkwood

There are no shortages of other things to do for a few hours or a whole day. A few miles west of the Dene Rally is the famous Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe. Another great place to take the kids is the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium, an interactive science and technology attraction geared toward children.

Dogs are welcomed as long that they are well behaved, and their owners understand that the grounds need to be kept clean. Drivers are encouraged to use the free vintage bus, but if that is not possible, check with the fair organisers on Facebook for on-site parking and accommodations for those with disabilities. The most essential 'requirement', however is to bring yourself and your family prepared to have a full day or weekend of fun.
