About the Shanes Castle May Day Steam Rally
The ruins of Shane’s Castle sit in picturesque Antrim, Northern Ireland along the northeast shore of Lough Neagh. For two-days each May the castle grounds host the Shane’s Castle May Day Steam Rally.
This is one of the most prominent steam events in the All-Ireland vintage scene. Each year the rally showcases over 800 exhibitors displaying a wide variety of steam engines, tractors, large vehicles, and heavy equipment. The rally draws up to 18,000 visitors for the 2-day event.
In addition to the equipment on display, live demonstrations will be given for visitors covering a wide range of exciting and almost-forgotten-in-our-modern-world manufacturing and working techniques. Take a turn-at-the-churn to make butter, or pump the bellows for the blacksmith. Take the younger children to the petting zoo to meet cuddly farm animals. The trade area offers 70 vendors to buy many one-of-a-kind tools, equipment, and artisan wares.
Shane’s Castle Steam Rally
The rally is sponsored by the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council and Tourism Northern Ireland.
Entry To The Rally
Entry to the event is £10 for adults, £5 for children under 12, and £7 for seniors. Or £25 for a family ticket that includes 2 adults and up to 3 children. Parking is free and on-site.

Other Things To Do Around The Area
Be sure to thoroughly explore the ruins of Shane’s Castle while onsite. For other history in the area, visit the Antrim Castle Gardens for scenic walking and biking paths, an art gallery, and a coffee shop. Or stand at the base of the Antrim Round Tower. It was once the bell tower for a long-gone monastery and is 28-metres (nearly 92-feet) tall. For a taste of wildlife, visit the World of Owls near Randalstown. Shane’s Castle, near Randalstown in Antrim, Northern Ireland, was originally constructed in 1345, but the name was changed in 1722. The castle grounds are used extensively in movies and television, recently featured in episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Bring the family to this historical setting to experience antique steam-powered equipment, learn a historic manufacturing process, or soak up the grandeur of this idyllic setting in Northern Ireland.
