About the Castle Howard Traction Engine Rally
A frequent location for movies, television, and videos, Castle Howard sits about 15 miles northwest of York off the A64. It is one of 10 Treasure Houses of England, a heritage consortium of English Stately homes founded in the early 1970s. This beautiful location will be the site of this year’s Castle Howard Traction Engine Rally, an event not to be missed!
This three-day event combines the regal elegance of the Castle Howard and combines it with the simple 'easy-going' feel of a traditional steam rally.
When you purchase your ticket, think of it as a steam rally with a bonus. You will gain access to all of the exhibits and entertainment of the rally plus be able to enter the Castle Howard Garden where fountains, walled gardens, temples and woodland paths will be open for your full enjoyment. The Childrens Corner with inflatables, bungee trampolines and go-karts will use up some of that excess energy of childhood. Fairground organs will play, vintage vehicles will be on display. Old gents in bib overalls will mingle with young folks in the latest fashions, and in the evening, there will be entertainment for public campers and exhibitors.
Outdoor Shows Ltd
After almost a 40 year absence, 2019 marked the return of the steam rally to Castle Howard. Prior to the 1980s, it was a regular venue for steam rallies. The organiser is Outdoor Shows Limited, established in 2012. The company has rapidly built up a solid reputation for high-quality events offering great weekends of fun and entertainment for the whole family.
Entry To The Rally
The fun begins at 10:00 a.m. each day Saturday through Monday until 5:00 p.m. when public campers and exhibits will begin to enjoy the evening festivities. Same day gate prices are £12.95 for adults, £12.00 for seniors and other special categories, £8.50 for kids age 4 to 16, and little folks under age 4 are free. Two family packages for one adult and 3 under 16s for £21.50 or £34.50 for two adults and 3 kids are offered. Exhibitors will need to submit the downloadable entry form. Note that there is a slight discount if tickets are pre-purchased online.
Somewhere to Stay in Yorkshire
Campers and Caravaners must pre-book a pitch as soon as possible to enjoy a wonderful weekend with full access to the three-day event. Arrive on Friday and stay until Tuesday and take part in the evening activities with the exhibitors. The pitch price for the whole weekend is £75.00, add £42.00 for an electric hook-up, £15 for an added adult and £7.50 for an added kid. People who prefer hotels will find no shortage of hotels near the castle or in York that will suit any budget.
Getting To Castle Howard
Drivers approaching Castle Howard from the A170, about 12 miles to the north, will head south on Kirkdale Lane and continue south on Black Lane. The name of the road will change to Moor Lane. Stay to the right and continue south on Ings Lane, Riccal, and West Ness. Take a right turn onto Railway Street, a left at Green Dyke Lane, and a right turn at The Balk. Pass through the town of Slingsby and veer left onto Slingsby Bank and to the destination. Drivers from the south will exit the A64 at Slingsby Hovingham and head north to Mains Lane that changes to The Stray at Welburn and goes to the Castle. There is a local bus service but check with the organisers for the exact schedule.
Other Things To Do Around The Area
Spending three days at the Castle Howard Traction Engine Rally is something that only the most ardent steam enthusiast will do. The more adventurous people may want to schedule a side trip or two over the three day weekend. Nearby York provides many opportunities for your family to enjoy and learn. A visit to York Minster to see the Pilgrimage Window (dating from about 1312) will be high on anyone’s 'to do' list. Another place to go is the York City Museum featuring The Cells in the old Debtors Prison that housed prisoners from at least 1000 years ago. But beware, there is a database of former prisoners going back hundreds of years where you may run across one of your ancestors.
This event offers free parking and is dog-friendly. Mobility scooters are available but don’t try to enter them in the Final Steam Parade held in the arena. Drink in the atmosphere of Castle Howard and take a little step back in time as you stroll around the grounds and see all of the vintage items from a previous era.
