Vintage Event In Yorkshire

About the Vintage Vehicle Rally

If you are sitting in a pub in Yorkshire County and are not afraid to make a small wager, announce that you will bet a small sum to anyone who knows what Frederick Walton, born near Halifax in 1834, was famous for without resorting to their smartphones. Chances are you will win and get some groans when you reveal that he was the inventor of linoleum, a flooring material popular before PVC. If that doesn't "floor" them, the Vintage Vehicle Rally held at Kirklees Light Railway (KLR) in Clayton West, certainly will.

Hosted by the Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club at KLR's Clayton West Station, the Rally will display over 150 classic and vintage vehicles and motorcycles. The Rally is a one-day Saturday happening.

There will be many other activities for every member of your family in addition to the collection of cars from the past. The Clayton West station has outdoor picnic areas and an outdoor adventure playground for the kids. There is a miniature 7.25-inch railway that "whizzes" around the duck pond for only £1.00 unless the weather intervenes. KLR has three other stations that will give you access to walking routes and other attractions

Kirklees Light Railway

KLR sits on the site where the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway station opened on September 1, 1879. The railway ran for 104 years, finally closing in 1983. Brian and Doreen Taylor slowly built the KLR in stages, and when it came time for them to retire, the railway was acquired in 2006 by Stately Albion, a family-owned company that continues to make improvements.

Entry To The Rally

The cars will be on display from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 the Clayton West Station and entry is free to the public. The steam trains will be operating every 40 minutes between 10.20 a.m. and 3.40 p.m. from the station with standard fares in effect. The adult "on the day" fare is £8.00 and £7.00 if purchased in advance. Children age 3-16 tickets are £6.00 (£5.00), Over 60's, Students, and Carers fare is £7.00 (£6.00) and children under age 3 are free. Check out the two family packages at £26.00 (£22.00) for a family of 4 and £29.00 (£24.50) for the family plus one additional fare.

Somewhere to Stay in Yorkshire

Folks staying in an RV can stay at the Highfield House Caravan Park approximately two miles from the station. Hotel lodging is plentiful in the area between Wakefield and Huddersfield to fit any budget, but it is not known if any of the hotels offer luxurious linoleum floors.

Getting To Kirklees Light Railway

If you are driving to the Rally from Wakefield, navigate to the Haigh Roundabout where the M1 meets up with the A637 (Huddersfield Road) and head northwest to another roundabout where the A637 meets with the A636 (Denby Dale Road). The name of the road will change to Wakefield Road as you enter Clayton West. Turn left at Park Mill Way to the destination. From Huddersfield, take the A629 south to the B6116 that will meander a bit but intersect with the A636. Head north on the A636 to Clayton West and Park Mill Way. If you get "lost" there are several pubs along the way to stop by and "ask directions" over a pint of ale or engage in some linoleum trivia. After three "directions" stops, let your partner take over the driving to KLR.

Other Things To Do Around Clayton West

The Bagshaw Museum in nearby Batley is a great place to visit during your stay in the Clayton West area. The museum features "a wide range of unusual and exciting collections from around the globe" and The Kingdom of Osiris', an atmospheric Egyptology gallery. While there, ask about any information about Frederick Walton to prepare you for that crazy guy making bets in the pub. If they don't have any information, another place to try is the Tolson Museum in Huddersfield.

Dogs are welcome, but please call in advance so "Rover" can get the Rover Day Rover ticket free of charge. The trains are not accessible for people with wheelchairs, but a folding wheelchair can be carried and every effort to find a comfortable seat on the carriage will be made. Unfortunately, there are no plans by KLR to hold a "Linoleum Festival" any time in the foreseeable future.
