About the Friends of Ferguson Vintage Tractor Show
Americans visiting the city of York in the UK looking for a minty chocolate treat called a 'Peppermint Pattie' will soon learn that this city of about 210,000 is not where they originated. That distinction goes to York in the state of Pennsylvania named after the English city. The disappointment, however, will be short-lived as the British York is a top UK beer destination. After a few ales at a York pub, our travellers will want to make plans in February to visit the nearby village of Shiptonthorpe, population about 500, to see the Friends of Ferguson Vintage Tractor Show held at Langlands Garden Centre.
The two-day show, usually held on a February weekend, is all about celebrating the heritage of classic farm vehicles and other exhibits. It promises to be a fun and educational experience for the entire family.
Those other exhibits will be stationary engines, small commercial vehicles, and classic cars in addition to the vintage tractors. The experience will be enhanced by the owners who are always eager to talk about their prized possession, be it a tractor, a classic car or an agricultural relic from the pages of farming history. It may even distract your teenager away from his or her smartphone enough actually to learn something. Langlands’ Pop-Up Café will be serving food and other treats.
Friends of Ferguson Heritage
The host of the show is Langlands Garden Centre established initially by Walter Ducker in 1964. It is still a family run business and the winner of many awards from the Garden Centre Association.
Entry To The Event
The show is free to attend, but visitors are asked to donate what they can to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service. The show will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day under the event canopy at Langlands.
Somewhere to Stay in Yorkshire
The Tractor Show is held in mid-winter, so those who are crazy enough to sleep in a tent are advised to wear long johns first and then seek professional help as well as learn first aid for frostbite. Caravaners will be able to walk to the show at The Hollies campsite but the capacity is limited to 5 RVs at this private campsite. There are several other nearby caravaner options for people staying a night or so. Hotels are plentiful off A1079 heading east or west away from the show.
Getting To Langlands Garden Centre
Drivers approaching the Tractor Show from York will travel about 18 miles west on the A1079 to Shiptonthorpe. Drivers coming from other directions will converge at the village’s one roundabout and head east on the A1079. Go past the McDonalds and make a left turn into the Langland’s Garden Centre. There is a bus line that runs from York to Shiptonthorpe, but check with the organisers for the exact schedule.
Other Things To Do Around Shiptonthorpe
If you have not recovered from your dismay over Peppermint Patties, the UK York has a rich history of chocolate that you can explore at York's Chocolate Story. Take the tour and learn about the origins of chocolate and about York's founding confectionery families. The Best of York on Foot is also a 90-minute tour that fans of history will enjoy.
Langlands Garden Centre is wheelchair accessible, and dogs are very welcome but keep them outside as only trained assistance dogs can enter the Coffee Shop, Café Bar or Farm Shop. There is, however, a Dog Café area outside the Coffee Shop and it serves your pooch’s favourite beverage; cool water.
