About the GMES Public Open Afternoon
The Guildford Model Engineering Society is located in the southern town of Guildford in Surrey. The Society has its own red-brick clubhouse and outdoor grounds that are set in a quiet cul-de-sac just off the main London Road.
Check out the videos below of the outdoor model locomotive in action (put the sound on to hear the whistle blows and engine shunting). You will easily understand the draw and attraction that this event provides to the local enthusiasts and those eager to learn and see more about this scaled-down world!
The event features an outdoor track, capable of carrying passengers, an indoor OO gauge model railway inside the clubhouse, and an outdoor scale garden railway which runs around the grounds. The open day usually has a selection of working model traction engines, model boats, and a small selection of other attractions.
Guildford Model Engineering Society
The GMES was founded and established in the early 1950s as a way for the local enthusiasts to share their passions, develop skills, and encourage the production of working engineering models. The society is always welcoming to new members who share their passion and love of any aspects of the modelling world. To find out more, or to join the society, send them an email, pick up an application form at the clubhouse, or just stop by at the event and have a chat.
Entry To The Event
The open afternoons typically run from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. Ticket prices are £1.50 for a single ride or £5 for a book of four. Unused tickets can be used at later open afternoons. There is no need to pre-book, just turn up on the day.
Somewhere to Stay in Surrey
Being so close to Guildford Town Centre there is obviously a great selection of accommodation around. For the cost-conscious, consider the Acacia Villas Guest House on Woodbridge Road. This is about five minutes drive from the GMES event, and is walkable too - there is a footpath through Stoke Park which takes you straight to the event grounds. For those that prefer camping, head south a little to Chantry Wood - there are a couple of sites here that are very attractive.
Getting To GMES site
Guildford Model Engineering Society is located just off the A3 signposted to Guildford (A322) and Horsham (A281). Exit the slip road on the A3 and follow the A25 east for a bout 1 mile until you get to the roundabout at the A3100. Take the exit at London Road, signposted for the Guildford Center, and GMES is on the right hand side a short drive away. Look out for the big green 'Welcome to Stoke Park Burchatts Farm Gate' and 'Steam Train Rides' signs at the entrance.
Other Things To Do Around London Road
There is plenty to do and see around the area, to suit all tastes. However, we usually stick to the historic interests and on that note, while around Guildford, check out:
- Guildford Cathedral: 20th-century building, with onsite exhibition and small gift shop.
- Guildford Castle: Picturesque mound-top Keep with cosy open area, situated close to the museum.
- Guildford Museum: History of the local area and people.
Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome at the event. Drinking water for your dog is available. Dog mess should not be left behind.
