About the Summer Steampunk Steaming
Merriam-Webster defines “Steampunk” as” science fiction dealing with 19th-century societies dominated by historical or imagined steam-powered technology.” The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as “books or movies about an imagined time when machines used steam for power rather than modern engines and methods, or a style of fashion based on this.” A third definition of Steampunk can be found in the town of Crofton, located about 10 miles southeast of Marlborough. Throw away your dictionaries because the best definition is “A whole lot of fun” at the Summer Steampunk Steaming event at the Crofton Pumping Station.
This annual two-day weekend event is held in July and promises to be full of steampunk activities including steampunk displays, exhibitors, and traders. Plenty of food and drink will enhance the ambiance of a 200-year-old working steam engine house.
The first order of business is to remember to bring your Steampunk goggles. They will not only keep the steam out of your eyes, but you will also be making a Steampunk fashion statement with any custom modifications. Next comes your hat be it a humble bowler or a stovepipe followed by your Victorian and Edwardian period attire complete with corsets, waistcoats, bustles, and frock coats. Now you are ready to experience the Tea Duelling, Teapot Races, and Nerf Gun battles and of course, the Steampunk entertainers like Professor Elemental and, Alice’s Night Circus and many more new acts.
Crofton Beam Engines
The Crofton Pumping Station is the perfect venue for Steampunk and unlike the people who will attend this event, it was there in the age of steam. Built in 1807, the 1812 Boulton and Watt and the 1846 Harvey engine still work and are steamed during the summer months from a coal-fired Lancashire boiler. It is now one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in the UK. The event organiser is Crofton Beam Engines, part of the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust which purchased it in 1968 for conservation and restoration.
Entry To The Event
The normal admission fee for non-steam days at the Crofton Pumping Station. Is £5.00 for adults with the Gift Aid included (£4.50 standard with no Gift Aid). The fee for students and concessions for those aged 60 and above is £4.50 (£4.00). Children under age 16, caretakers, and Trust members enter for free. The Summer Steampunk Steaming is a special event so the standard entry fees may not apply. Visitors are urged to check with Crofton Beam Engines as the date of the show approaches. The fun will begin at 10:00 a.m. and run until 5:00 p.m.
Somewhere to Stay in Wiltshire
Campers and Caravaners are advised to book pitches as soon as possible as there are limited spaces at a few campgrounds near Crofton. One is the Postern Hill Campsite, about 8 miles north of the pumping station that features an “idyllic setting of the ancient Savernake Forest…”. Another is the Bayardo Farm Caravan Site, a few miles west of Crofton. Hotels and B&Bs are in plenty supply in nearby Newbury and Swindon.
Other Things To Do Around Marlborough
Steampunk enthusiasts looking for a side trip have several options. One is The Merchant's House museum in Marlborough, a glorious restoration of a 17th Century silk merchant's house with many items of historical interest. Another scenic place to see is The Wilton Windmill, located in the heart of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Wiltshire. It is the only operating windmill in Wessex.
Dogs are welcome if they are on a leash and well behaved but only trained assistance dogs can enter the boiler and engine houses. A small 32 spot parking area at the pumphouse is available for £1.00 for up to two hours and all-day for £2.50. A spacious nearby field is available for parking at larger events. This steaming is a combination of indoor/outdoor events with the indoor area wheelchair accessible in most areas. Remember that all of you “natty gents” will need to polish your pocket watches before visiting the Summer Steampunk Steaming.
