About the Scale Modelworld
About 80 miles south of Manchester is Shropshire County, the birthplace of Charles Darwin, the 'father' of the theory of evolution. Fifteen miles east of Shropshire is the modern town of Telford and site of the Telford International Centre (TIC), the venue of the weekend model engineering show called Scale Modelworld.
Even Darwin might remark that it doesn’t take a 'monkey’s uncle' to see that Scale Modelworld is the world’s most excellent scale model show.
The show will feature over 150 traders and nearly 200 Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Thousands of models will be on display along with lots of kit swapping, demonstrations and an international competition that is second to none. Major manufacturers at the show may use it as a platform to announce their new releases. Book publishers, model retailers and magazines will all be there. Past shows have featured unique displays like the SIG Apollo 11 50 years by NASA or the Calm before the storm 1936-1939 by the Bomber Command SIG. One highlight of the show is the Saturday evening IPMS Annual Dinner.
International Plastic Modellers’ Society (UK)
With over 4000 members in the UK alone, the International Plastic Modellers’ Society (IPMS) now has over 110 IPMS branches and SIGs in the UK and about 70 more internationally. The society was founded in 1963 and is inclusive of 'anything from basic kits to complicated scratch-built models.' Plastic is predominate but other materials like resin, etched, and cast metal are also welcome at this annual show.
Entry To The Event
Model enthusiasts are urged to purchase a membership that includes many benefits like free priority entry (admission allowed before the general public) on both days of the show and priority entry to other events like the Kit Swap. Contact IPMS for details and entry prices for non-members. The show runs from 10:00 a.m. each day until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday with members getting the free priority admission.
Somewhere to Stay in Shropshire
One more benefit of an IPMS membership is discounted hotel accommodation. There are too many hotels around TIC to list those that honour the discount, but members and non-members have plenty of choices with hotel accommodations. Campers who are adventurists can find some caravan and campgrounds in Telford and those who are truly adventurous can try the clothing-optional Telford Naturist Club. Just remember that the show is in November so it might be a bit chilly running around a campsite in your 'birthday suit'!
Getting To Telford International Centre
Drivers approaching the event on the M54 from the west will exit at junction 5 and head south toward Telford Centre. At the first of four roundabouts, take the 2nd exit onto Forge Gate. At the second one, take the 1st exit onto Lawn Central. At the third one, take the 3rd exit onto Grange Central. For the fourth and final one, take the 1st exit onto St Quentin Gate and to the International Centre. Drivers on the M54 from the east will exit at junction 4 and will encounter four roundabouts as well. The first one will take you south from the M4 and onto the A464. Stay on the A464 through the second one. The third one is where the road name changes to Queen Elizabeth Avenue. The final one is where the second exit leads to the destination. Drivers from the A442 from the south will exit at the roundabout at the A464 and Queen Elizabeth Avenue and head west on Queen Elizabeth Avenue to the international destination.
Other Things To Do Around Telford
If you don’t mind a 30-mile drive southwest to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, then you and your family can spend some time learning about the Iron age and seeing a massive replica of a mammoth discovered nearby. Another excellent side trip is a canoe or kayak trip down the beautiful River Severn with Shropshire Raft Tours based in Telford.
TIC is an accessible venue for everyone with mobility issues. This is an indoor event so check with IPMS about dogs and if parking is free for this event. Dress is casual but not quite as relaxed as those model enthusiasts arriving from the Telford Naturist Club.
When is the next Scale Modelworld?
The Scale Modelworld is planned to take place at Telford International Centre, St Quentin Gate, Telford, Shropshire, TF3 4JH, Saturday 7th November, 2020. This is a Weekend Model Engineering Show.
