About the Mid-Summer Steam Up
The Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum is on the North Bank of the River Parrett, south-east of Bridgwater in the charming county of Somerset. The pumping station is perched on the east bank of the River Parrett where it draws water to feed its mighty engines.
Throughout the year, generally between the 'Start of Year Steam Up' in March and the unique 'Halloween Steam Up' in October, the Museum holds numerous monthly events. See the full list about halfway down this page. During each event, the Museum opens its door to display its massive collection of pumps and machines as well as inviting other clubs and organisations to showcase their unique collections.
As well as all the stationary steam engines and pumps on display the Museum has a lovely little onsite Tea Rooms and gift shop. Great selection of hot drinks, homemade cakes and pastries, and all prepared under 1960's flood level!
Westonzoyland Pumping Station
Westonzoyland Engine Trust was borne from the efforts of Somerset Industrial Archaeology Society who decided, one day, to tackle the repair of the abandoned buildings and machinery. Work and maintenance remain ongoing and can sometimes prove challenging due to the nature of the Museum exhibits but also because of the Pumping Station's Grade II listed status. If you have time, money or both to donate, 'Westonzotland Pumping Station Musem of Steam Power and Land Drainage' would probably like to hear from you.
Entry To The Event
Most events open from noon and finish at 4.00 pm. Admission is £8 for adults, £7 for concessions (over 60s and students), with no charge for well-behaved children or assisted aiders. When the Musem is not holding a special event, entry is free every Sunday (except Christmas and Boxing Day) from 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm. The Museum runs as a charity, and therefore all proceeds are used for upkeep and maintenance purposes. If you are feeling generous or hungry, just buy an extra cake or two at the tea rooms.
Somewhere to Stay in Somerset
This is Somerset, so there is no shortage of places to stay. For those who cannot get enough of the Riverside, check into The Boat and Anchor Inn at Meads Crossing in Huntworth, or the Marston's Admirals Table in Dunball. Both within short driving distance to the Pumping Station.
Getting To Hoopers Lane
From the north or south, you can reach Hoopers Lane via junction 24 of the M5. The route is a little convoluted as the junction puts you on the other side of the River. Therefore, you will need to head west into Bridgwater and leave town, east, on the A372 towards Langport. Follow the A372 for about 3 miles until you reach Westonzoyland. In Westonzoyland look out for the post box, and local shop as the road makes a hard left turn. At that junction turn right onto School Road and take another right just as the road bears left. You should spot the brown tourist sign for 'Musgrove Willows'. Follow that road for a mile until you bear left onto Hoopers Lane (signposted here for 'Pumping Station Museum'). The Museum is off a side road on the right.
Other Things To Do Around Nr Bridgwater
Presuming you like attractions of historical note, check out Vivary Park to the south-west in Taunton for a compelling day of outdoor attractions and beautifully kept gardens. Vivary Park also boasts a top-notch coffee shop where weary walkers can rest their feet. Other attractions in the area include the Georgian and Victorian Hestercombe House and Gardens in Hestercombe and Lytes Cary Manor in Somerton.
Free parking is available at the side of the Pumping Station. Your well-behaved dog on a lead is welcome in some parts of the Museum. Don't forget to visit They Tea Rooms for a well-deserved sit-down and a nice cuppa.
