About the West Pennine Wood Turners
The Norden Methodist Church is in the town of Rochdale that sits at the foothills of the South Pennines in Lancashire. A unique and skilled group called the West Pennine Wood Turners meet there regularly to discuss business and plan their events for the upcoming months. One place on their agenda is the Ellenroad Engine House and Steam Museum, about six miles east on the other side of Rochdale.
The Ellenroad Trust Ltd. was established in 1985 to “ensure the preservation of the Ellenroad Engine House and Engines”. The Trust arranged for the refurbishment of the facility to run it as a steam museum.
The Museum is open every Sunday for folks to stop by and look at the impressive twin tandem compound steam engines named Victoria and Alexandra. On the first Sunday of each month, those engines come alive. And as an added attraction they provide entertainment like music and clogging exhibitions and give groups like the West Pennine Wood Turners a venue to show off their skills by displaying and making their wonderful creations throughout the day.
Ellenroad Engine House
The Ellenroad Mill was first built in 1890 and served 92 years. Victoria and Alexandra were in use beginning in 1917 until the building was demolished in 1982. In 1985, after the Ellenroad Trust Ltd was formed, it began the efforts to restore the boiler house and the engines to make them exhibits in the steam museum.
Entry To The Event
The Ellenroad Engine House is open every Sunday with the first Sunday of each month as the in-steam day. On those days, the entry fee is only £5.00, and children under 16 years of age enter for free. The hours are 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. On non-steam Sundays, the doors close an hour earlier at 3:00 p.m. The admission is free on non-steam Sundays, but any donations are gladly accepted and appreciated.
Somewhere to Stay in Lancashire
Campers and RVs can find pitches at the highly rated Dearden Wood Campsite just east of Rochdale off A56. In the same area is another camping and “glamping” site called The Paddock, also located off A56 in Ramsbottom. There are numerous hotels and B&Bs in and around Rochdale for weekend travellers on a budget or those who are celebrating a recent windfall.
Other Things To Do Around Newhey
Weekend visitors to the Manchester area will have a complete Saturday to visit some of the sights before Sunday’s show by the West Pennine Wood Turners. Manchester is home to England’s National Football Museum with artifacts like the original rules of Association Football written down when the Association was formed in 1863 in the Freemasons Tavern in London. The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), on the site of the world's oldest railroad station, is another great place to take the whole family.
Parking is free and there is an attractive picnic area by the river. Disabled access is limited so please check with the Mill for information about wheelchair use and special needs that someone in your group may have. Also, ask about the Mill’s policy on dogs. And if you get lost on the way to the Ellenroad Engine House, just look for the 220-foot chimney.
