About the Wigan Model Railway Exhibition
Wigan is located about 25 miles east of Manchester and is known as a centre of popular music for young people. The World Pie Eating Championship is usually held each year at Harry's Bar. Wiganers are sometimes referred to as "pie-eaters" that some say dates to 1926 when a strike by Wigan coal miners resulted in them having metaphorically to eat "humble pie". Another annual event just outside Wigan at the Robin Park Leisure Centre is the Wigan Model Railway Exhibition.
There will be no figurative pie servings of humility at this event as the absolutely fantastic miniature scenes featuring model trains and railroads will be proudly displayed by their builders.
You will feel like Gulliver in the land of Lilliput looking down at the miniature scenes that seem eerily alive with buildings, roads, pastures, and automobiles. The real stars are the railroad scenes with the stations built to exacting details, the locomotives, the train cars, carriages and of course, the cabooses. Even the tracks with their fine details down to the spikes will make you appreciate the great efforts of the builders. Most impressive is seeing the locomotives in motion complete with the rhythmic clickety-clack of metal wheels on metal rails and the iconic steam whistle signifying the approaching train.
Wigan Finescale Railway Modellers
The exhibition has been going on for over 50 years and has witnessed many changes in the hobby. The first modellers from the 1960s relied on kits to upgrade locomotives that were more a toy than a model to put on display. The hobby has now evolved into the elaborate displays that can be quite costly. The venue has also changed from a simple array of tables in perhaps a local hall to its present location at Robin Park Leisure Centre.
Entry To The Event
Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. are the show hours. A £10.00 fee gets you in the door and includes a guidebook. Children are free, and tickets purchased online in advance are at a slight discount.
Somewhere to Stay in Lancashire
Wigan is certainly not a small town in some remote location, so there are many hotel accommodations if your visit to the exhibition is more than just a one-day road trip. Caravaners will find a few campsites in the area but by October, the late autumn temperatures may present a challenge to tent campers so please plan accordingly.
Getting To Robin Park Leisure Centre
Drivers coming off the M6 at the Crow Orchard Road Roundabout will head east until the first roundabout. Head south on the B5206 (Shevington Lane). At the next roundabout, take a left exit to Old Lane until it terminates at the B5375 (Wigan Road). Take another left onto Wigan and then a right onto Scott Lane. The next turn is a left onto Anjou Boulevard, pass through one roundabout and at the second roundabout, take the exit onto Loire Drive that leads to the Robin Park Leisure Centre. Drivers arriving from the south need to get to Robin Park Road from a number of roads and then make a right onto Loire Drive and to the destination. The Centre is in the middle of a large shopping complex that will make it easy to find.
Other Things To Do Around Wigan
The best place to explore Wigan is at the Museum of Wigan Life, a public museum and local history resource centre in Wigan. Are you curious about glass? Another great place to visit is The World of Glass in nearby St. Helens with glass artefacts dating back to Ancient Egypt from 3000 years BC. With Glass from all around the world across many centuries, you will see how glass has played a very important part of everyday life.
The Robin Park Leisure Centre allows service dogs and is wheelchair accessible with free parking. But do check with the organisers of the event. The models are fragile, and there may be some restrictions not mentioned here. Finally, there are several good bakery shops in Wigan, so be sure to stop at one of them if you find yourself craving a pie, hopefully, apple and not 'humble'.
When is the next Wigan Model Railway Exhibition?
The Wigan Model Railway Exhibition is planned to take place at Robin Park Leisure Centre, Loire Drive, Wigan, Lancashire, WN5 0UL, Saturday 3rd October, 2020. This is a Weekend Model Railway Exhibition.
