About the Windsor International Toy Fair
Windsor Castle is one of the official residences of the royal family. Located in the town of Windsor, it sits about 25 miles west of London. Less than a mile from the Castle by foot is the Windsor Leisure Centre where the Windsor International Toy Fair is held every year.
Sponsored by the Maidenhead Static Model Club, this one-day event is the place for toy lovers young and old to browse a variety of iconic toys including Lego, Action Man, tinplate toys, Corgi, Dinky and Matchbox toy cars.
The whole family will enjoy the international collections of toy dealers from Europe and elsewhere. The most popular toys from past shows included Lego Star Wars, Action Man, and Hot Wheels cars, according to the fair organisers. Kids will be overjoyed, and parents may feel the pressure to buy some early Christmas gifts. Older folks may be able to find that special toy from their past that cannot be found in toy stores. The Fair is self-described as “more than events, they are special occasions.”
Maidenhead Static Model Club
The Maidenhead Static Model Club (MSMC), established in 1969, is the oldest model and toy collectors’ club in the UK. The international toy fair arrived a year later when a group of toy and model enthusiasts decided that their regular get-togethers held in homes or pubs needed more room. MSMC plays host to raffles, annual fish and chips meals, Scalextric (a brand of slot cars) nights, themed displays, competitions, and trips to toy factories and abroad.
Entry To The Fair
The Windsor International Toy Fair runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. but stallholders and exhibitors will have access to set up and takedown from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. For visitors, the adult fee is £3.00, Concession is £2.50 and there is an early entry option at 9:00 a.m. for £7.00.
Somewhere to Stay in Berkshire
Windsor is a tourist draw so the number of hotels and B&B accommodations are many for those choosing to make the Toy Fair an overnight or weekend family getaway. There are plentiful Camping, Glamping, and Caravan sites and parks in the surrounding area.
Other Things To Do Around Windsor
First-time visitors to Windsor may want to book a tour of the Windsor Castle, see the Queen Victoria statue, and visit the Jubilee Fountain to immerse themselves in the tradition of the constitutional monarchy. Those looking for a mini-road trip may want to consider the Museum of Berkshire Aviation located about 20 miles west of Windsor at the historic site of Woodley Airfield, near Reading.
The Windsor Leisure Centre is a multi-purpose health and fitness facility and that can make parking difficult when the exhibition hall holds an event. If the main parking lot is full the Alexandra Gardens or Alma Road car parks are a short walk from the centre. For information on handicapped access and policy for dogs please contact the centre. One note to American visitors: if the Queen does make an appearance at the Windsor International Toy Fair, the ladies should perform a small curtsy, and men should bow from the head only. Do not approach her offering a “high 5” saying “wassup queenie?” as a greeting.
When is the next Windsor International Toy Fair?
The Windsor International Toy Fair is planned to take place at Windsor Leisure Centre, Stovell Road, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 5JB, Saturday 26th September, 2020. This is a Model Engineering Event.
