About the Great Central Railway Diesel Gala
The industrial revolution started with the hoot and toot of the train whistle. Without the train, the revolution would have failed. Preserving these fantastic backbones of the development of the United Kingdom is essential. Visit the only double track, mainline heritage railway in operation.
The Great Central Railway in Leicester pulls out all the vintage diesel equipment for this special day of rail travel. Ride the line from Leicester to Loughborough, see all the sights, catch all the wind in your face, and experience classic train travel, British-style. Multiple stops along the route offer different opportunities to experience the Leicestershire countryside.
Preservation efforts began in 1971 and re-opened this classic stretch of rail that used to serve the greater London and Midlands areas for more than 130-years. Dining cars, tea rooms, and souvenirs shops fill out the day without leaving the line. Many excellent restaurants and shops surround several of the stations for visitors to disembark and explore.
Great Central Railway
The David Clarke Railway Trust and the Friends of the Great Central Main Line (FoGCML) sponsor the event and support the railway. Membership and volunteer opportunities are available.
