About the Great Central Railway Diesel Gala

The industrial revolution started with the hoot and toot of the train whistle. Without the train, the revolution would have failed. Preserving these fantastic backbones of the development of the United Kingdom is essential. Visit the only double track, mainline heritage railway in operation.

The Great Central Railway in Leicester pulls out all the vintage diesel equipment for this special day of rail travel. Ride the line from Leicester to Loughborough, see all the sights, catch all the wind in your face, and experience classic train travel, British-style. Multiple stops along the route offer different opportunities to experience the Leicestershire countryside.

Preservation efforts began in 1971 and re-opened this classic stretch of rail that used to serve the greater London and Midlands areas for more than 130-years. Dining cars, tea rooms, and souvenirs shops fill out the day without leaving the line. Many excellent restaurants and shops surround several of the stations for visitors to disembark and explore.

Great Central Railway

The David Clarke Railway Trust and the Friends of the Great Central Main Line (FoGCML) sponsor the event and support the railway. Membership and volunteer opportunities are available.

Entry To The Event

Highly recommended for purchase for riding is the All-Day runabout ticket. This allows passengers to board at any station, ride to any other station along the line, unlimited throughout the day of purchase. A single adult runabout is £18, £9 for children. Family tickets are available for £30 (1 adult, 3 children) or £40 (2 adults, 3 children). Other tickets and packages are available at the ticket counter.

Somewhere to Stay in Leicestershire

The Leicestershire area offers fantastic accommodation for all visitors. In Leicester is the Kabalous Hotel Leicester with en suite bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and an onsite restaurant. For more budget-minded, the Premier Inn Leicester Central (A50) offers excellent amenities for an affordable price, including complimentary breakfast and Wi-Fi. Up the line in Loughborough, the Ramada by Wyndham Loughborough Hotel is nestled amidst shops and restaurants. At the Quorn stop, for the more elegant touch, stay at the Quorn Country Hotel, a 17th-century estate with gardens along the River Soar.

Getting To Quorn and Woodhouse Station

To drive to the Leicester North Station, use the A6-A563 interchange to go west to the first roundabout. Circle through almost a full circle to head back east and make a left turn at Sidings Road (about 100 meters or so), the station will be straight ahead. Arriva bus #127 offers service near to the Leicester and Loughborough stations. To travel by train, the nearest rail station is the Loughborough Network Rail Station, closest to the Loughborough Central Station. Taxi service is available to the GCR Loughborough Central Station.

Other Things To Do Around Quorn

The area is replete with many fun and exciting things to do. For a more scale train visit with the kids, swing by the Mountsorrel Railway to add a narrow-gauge experience to the day. Or swing by the Abbey Pumping Station Museum to learn about how water is sent to your home. The Station Museum also offers a narrow-gauge railroad tour. Alternatively, modern up the day with a trip to outer space on a tour of the National Space Centre in Leicester.
