About the Family Fun Steaming
In the land of the giants, where they placed Stonehenge as a marker of their existence, each May the Crofton Pumping Station fires up a more modern giant. Two antique and gigantic steam-powered beam engines return to life to demonstrate their mighty power.
Each year the Crofton Pumping Station presents the Family Fun Steaming event. The event features the firing of the 'Giants' in the pumphouse and also tours of the facility, activities for all ages, and history of the area.
Feeling a bit peckish, visit the onsite café for fresh handmade treats and drinks. During the steaming, hot BBQ and real ale, along with other specially catered items, will be available to satisfy those hunger pangs. Dine al fresco in the picnic area.
Crofton Beam Engines
The Crofton Pumping Station hosts and sponsors the event. Proceeds raised go to maintenance and upkeep of the giant beam engines.
Entry To The Event
Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the gate. Plenty of free onsite parking is available with a new parking area for cycles. Blue card parking is available. Assistance dogs are welcome unrestricted, but all other dogs must be on a lead and may not enter the buildings.
Somewhere to Stay in Wiltshire
The Wiltshire area boasts many fine places to stay. The Pelican Inn is a 17th-century village pub sporting 8 contemporary rooms with bathrooms and a cooked breakfast. Interested in trying 'glamping?' Book your stay at Totteridge Farm Camping Pods Wiltshire for a posh, highly rated glamping experience. For a taste of the Shakespearian, stay at The Lamb Inn. Dating from 1672 and located in the center of Marlborough, the updated rooms include TV, Wi-Fi, and free breakfast.
Getting To Crofton Pumping Station
If the train is your preferred form of transportation, the Bedwyn station is 3.2 km from the Mill, but no local bus service is available from the station to the Mill. Bring your bicycle and enjoy a ride through the countryside to the steaming. Driving there is easy. Off the M5, use exit 14, Hungerford Newtown, and go south on A338. At Eddington, the name changes, but with a few twists, the A338 will continue south past Hungerford. Turn west (right) on Great Bedwyn. Follow to the right where it becomes Jockey Green, and straight into Bedwyn. Turn left (south) onto Church Street, which becomes Crofton Road to the pump house.
Other Things To Do Around Marlborough
While you in the area for the steaming, visit the ancient Stonehenge monument. Whether you believe it was built by Merlin with the help of giants or by an unrecorded people in an unrecorded time, this prehistoric Neolithic structure was built to last. It stands in mystery as to its purpose and has stood against time and the elements for thousands of years. Do not miss an opportunity to visit this incredible landmark. For a mysterious venture, see (the considerably less ancient) 'The Monument'. Take a picnic lunch and stroll through the nearby woods. Want to stay close to the pumphouse? K & A Canal Lock 60 is just steps outside the pumphouse grounds and offers visitors the opportunity for a quiet stroll and to chat up some local houseboaters.
The giants who built Stonehenge would be humored by the 'tiny' steam-powered beam engines of the Crofton Pumphouse. For us, tiny humans, come see the massive beam engines fired and stay for the gigantic fun.
