Model Railway Exhibition In Suffolk

Saturday 24th October, 2020  -  Sunday 25th October, 2020 Weekend Model Railway Exhibition October, Suffolk No comments yet.

About the Lowestoft Model Engineering & Model Making Exhibition

Ormiston Denes Academy is located, on Yarmouth Road, Lowestoft in the easterly part of Suffolk. The secondary-school academy is located in historical St Margaret's Parish, which proved a magnificent backdrop for the LOWMEX Model Engineering and Model Making Exhibition.

Heralded as the most significant model exhibition in the area, this event draws in a big crowd of local enthusiasts, model makers, and exhibitors.

The models exhibited cover a broad spectrum of Model Engineering interests. In the past, these have included a 'Full-size Mechano Car', Steampunk, Clocks, Model Boats, Model Railways, Internal Combustion Engines, Historic Games Workshop Models, a full-size Dalek, Military Models, submarines, and much much more.

Halesworth & District Model Engineering Society

The event is run by members of the Halesworth and District Model Engineering Society (HDMES), who are based in Reydon in North Suffolk. The event is run to help raise money for 'S.O.L.D.', a charity dedicated to providing workshop environments for disabled people. HDMS are always receptive to hear from people who are interested in joining the society. Check out the link on the LOWMEX website for contact information, or see

Entry To The Event

The weekend show starts at 10.00 am each day, ending at 5.00 pm on Saturday and 4.00 pm on Sunday. Advertised as a family-friendly event, entrance fees are £5 for Adults, £2 for children aged 12 to 18, and under 12s get in for free if accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments are available inside the venue.

Somewhere to Stay in Suffolk

If you are travelling to LOWMEX from outside of the area and need some weekend accommodation, nearby Lowestoft has plenty to offer. There are more options further afield in neighbouring Norwich and Great Yarmouth. A quick search online will provide a multitude of options to suit every taste and budget. The closest hotel to the show is Bytree House, a 4-star hotel, about a 6 to 8-minute walk away. The event doesn't draw a crowd so big that every hotel is booked for miles around but we still recommend booking accommodation well in advance of the show.

Getting To Ormiston Denes Academy

Ormiston Denes Academy is one of the most easterly locations in the UK and can be accessed via the A47, which runs From Great Yarmouth in the North to the Harbour Bridge in the South and onto the A12 to Ipswich. From Norwich take the A146 through Beccles and pick up the A47 north after driving through town. Look out for the Blue and Gold signboards outside the academy.

Other Things To Do Around The Area

Sticking with one of the themes of the exhibition, the Lowestoft Maritime Museum is a stone's throw away. The Museum offers some unique glimpses of the local history and maritime heritage and can be a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Another Museum, if you like that sort of thing, is Lowestoft Museum at Nicholas Everitt Park whose exhibits also showcase the richness of the local history and people. Lowestoft Museum is about a ten-minute car ride from Ormiston Denes Academy. There is more to do in this neck of the woods than just look at museums. Remember that East Anglia is a coastal region, so there is plenty to see and do north and south of Lowestoft harbour.

Many exhibits are inside the school rooms so only guide dogs are allowed at the event - sorry. Free parking is available in the grounds. The event has a lot on-show, and if you are in the area and have not been there before, it is highly recommended.
